Parents to know : Reading with your child

A child’s early language and communication skills are not just the foundation of their literacy, but influence a lifetime of social, emotional and economic outcomes as well. With the pandemic disrupted too many children’s development, addressing the challenge of language and reading skills is essential in order to prevent short-term impacts becoming long-term problems.

We would like to share few tips for the reading sessions with your child:

- First and foremost - go gently. Point at the text when you are reading the story.

- Offer multiple readings. Reading a story to a child repeatedly builds their language development and understanding of how stories work.

- Look and find. Ask your child to find something on each page, e.g., “Can you find a tree? ”

- Talk about characters and settings.

These initial years of our children’s lives are crucial, and its remarkable how relatively small activities can make a real difference to their lives.

Happy reading
