Hands on Learning on National Handloom Day

On 7th August, Sakalya Wisdom Early Years celebrated National Handloom Day, providing our young learners with a hands-on experience of India’s rich cultural heritage. We demonstrated the “Charkha,” a traditional spinning wheel, allowing the children to engage directly by making yarn from cotton using a Box Charkha. This immersive experience gave our preschoolers a glimpse into the past, connecting them to the Swadeshi Movement and the significant role handloom plays in the socio-economic fabric of our country. Through these activities, we not only honour our traditions but also emphasize the importance of women empowerment, as over 70% of handloom weavers are women.

Did You Know? National Handloom Day, celebrated on 7th August, commemorates the Swadeshi Movement of 1905, which aimed to revive domestic products and production processes in response to the British partition of Bengal. This day highlights the handloom sector's contribution to India's cultural heritage and its crucial role in empowering women.

By allowing our students to actively participate in spinning the Charkha, we provided them with a meaningful connection to history, far beyond mere pictures. This celebration at Sakalya Wisdom Early Years was a beautiful way to instil appreciation for our cultural roots in the minds of our young learners.
