Creating readers through experiential reading – A Novel approach in Sakalya Curriculum

Reading has always been an inevitable part of our early years curriculum. We always look into the ways and means to bring in new pedagogies into practice to encourage our emergent readers. We have been working on experiential reading activity for the children keeping in mind the NEP guidelines for play based approach.

We introduced our experiential reading program during our summer camp to see how welcoming the little ones are to this new approach. The summer camp is planned for the children to have a fun and joyful learning experiences. During summer camp, yester years we used story telling and puppet sessions for the literacy element. This year we gave a big twist to the literacy element by introducing experiential reading sessions during summer camp aimed at inculcating the love for reading and nudging the little ones to make friends with books.

Meticulous and thoughtful preparation precedes the conduct of an experiential reading program. This program encompasses reading, retelling, pretend play, word acting, story board creation, vocabulary building and many more meaningful activities – sensory, cognitive, creative, etc. . It was amazing to see how children get elevated to the magical world of reading naturally. Let’s see the moments of experiential reading program conducted during the Sakalya Summer camp.
