Celebrating STEAM Day 2022

STEAM (Science Technology, Engineering Art and Math) Day 2022 is celebrated on 08 Nov 2022. At Sakalya Prep, The Holistic Preschool we commenced STEAM Day activities on 07 Nov on Marie Curie’s birthday. What a great day to give an impetus to the Inquiry Based education in Early year setting. Educators selected a physics and chemistry activity honouring the contribution of Marie Curie in these two branches of science.

To start with, little Sakalya Prep physicists created paper planes and launchers. They experimented with flying paper plane with and without the craft launcher. Curious minds had lots of questions through the fun STEAM activity. After physics, the children were given demonstration on the evolution of CO2 gas when vinegar and baking soda is mixed. Kids naturally related the effervescence with the fizz they see in the carbonated drinks. The natural question was the comparison of what they could create by mixing two substances and what they see in a soda-based drink. Educators used this moment to explain the healthy and unhealthy food.

Further, while explaining the contribution of Marie Curie, the educator showed children the X- ray film– a discovery which had huge impact on human history from World War 1 time to this day. It was great to see the awe expression on children’s face when they heard about Marie Curie who is a two-time Nobel prize winner. For senior children this was also a day to revisit the other Nobel laureates – Nelson Mandela, Mother Theresa and Rabindranath Tagore, whom they discussed during the morning circles in this academic year. We believe that the Sakalya way of learning offers a brightest start to little Sakalyans.
